The Miller County Pirates look to new head coach Brent Miller to set the ship back towards the post season. After missing the playoffs the past two seasons, this young Pirate team looks to get back to single A dominance.
Coach Brent Miller is the new man in charge and makes his way back to Miller County after coaching in Colquitt in the mid-80s. Coach Miller said, “The difference between then and now is that we were experienced at the skill positions, we are young at the skill positions now.”
The Pirates have 46 players on the roster with only 5 seniors. Miller County is young and it all starts under center with Freshman Quarterback Dylan Johnson. Johnson has the city of Colquitt buzzing with his arm strength. Coach Miller had a lot to say about his freshman quarterback, “Dylan has learned a lot in the spring. He’s made leaps and bounds and has become a better ball handler. He has four years of Pirate football and has a bright future.”
As Johnson matures in his quarterback role, he has a talented offensive line and two returning skill players, JJ George and Jakobe Cooper to help. These juniors are best friends and have started since they were freshman. Coach Miller stated, “We are going to have a great offensive line in front of JJ and Jakobe. These are going to be the main skill players and so goes your skill guys, so goes your team. They’ve really worked hard all spring and summer.”
The Pirates kick off their season on August 28th in Buena Vista, Georgia, at Marion County. Coach Miller said, “We’re excited to play another team. I’m mostly excited to see the hard work pay off. Nobody missed summer practice and I’m proud of them. Everyone wants to win right away. We have 46 players. 19 Freshmen and 15 Sophomores. We should have 3 or 4 bright years ahead of us.”
