A man was injured by gunfire during an altercation near public tennis courts in Bainbridge on the afternoon of Friday, March 20, according to Bainbridge Public Safety.

The fight happened shortly after 4 p.m. near the tennis courts located at the intersection of Boulevard Drive and Miluli Avenue, a couple of blocks south of the old Bainbridge cinemas.

When Public Safety officers responded to a report of gunfire, witnesses described a fight taking place, and at some point a man began shooting multiple times, BPS Major Robert Humphrey said. A large crowd of about 50 persons was said to be present at the scene of the altercation, said BPS Investigator Chip Nix.

In any event, a man was shot twice in the hand and was later treated at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he declined to press charges or give a statement, Humphrey said.

After piecing together what happened, Public Safety investigators arrested a man whom they believe was the shooter. Darrell L. Clemons, 43, of 1306 Miluli Avenue, Bainbridge, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and reckless conduct.

Investigator Nix said said there are differing accounts of whether the shooter was firing warning shots to disperse a crowd of people or was specifically targeting someone individually. The shooting happened near Clemons’ residence.
