The Bainbridge High School Lady Bearcats softball team won two games in the Region 1-AAAA softball tournament in Albany, Ga., on Tuesday night, granting them a guaranteed seed in the state playoffs.
Their march to state continued on Wednesday night, as they were scheduled to take on Crisp County in a region semifinal game. A BHS win on Wednesday night would guarantee either a #1 or #2 seed in the state playoffs, which means they would get to host their first round state playoff game in Bainbridge, Lady ‘Cats Assistant Coach Dennis Cato explained.
To get to the region semifinals, the Lady Bearcats won two games at the Albany Sports Complex on Tuesday night, both of which were broadcast live on Live 101.9 FM, one of our Flint Media stations.
In the first game, Bainbridge defeated Monroe by a score of 13-1. The game was called in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.
The second game was much closer and was scoreless until the bottom of the 7th inning, when Lady Bearcat Tykira Adams scored on a wild play to win the game with two outs on the board.
“We had two injured players going into Tuesday, so we had some girls playing who normally don’t start. However, they came through when it counted,” Assistant Coach Cato said.
Tykira Adams and Reilly Fletcher both got on base with hits in the bottom of the 7th. With two outs, sophomore Ty Gant came up to bat.

Coach Cato was standing by third base and told Adams what to expect.
“I knew they would be expecting us to lay down a squeeze bunt to get Adams across the plate, so they were probably going to watch her closely,” Cato said. “I thought the inning was over when Tykira ran about halfway down the baseline, but [Worth County’s pitcher] decided to try and tag Tykira out.”
Adams ran back to third base and touched safely. With the ball still in hand, Worth County’s pitcher began to walk back to the pitcher’s mound and their catcher began to walk back to home plate.
Seeing the catcher’s back turned to third base, Lady Cats’ Tykira Adams saw an opportunity and sprinted for home base, passing the pitcher and narrowly sliding into home plate before the catcher could catch the ball and make a tag.
Bainbridge High School fans were very excited to have the walkoff victory, and Worth County’s challenge that time may have been called was denied.
“No one can remember when the softball team has gone to region and gotten this far it has been an amazing season,” said fan Jessica Cannon, mother of the Lady Bearcats’ starting catcher, Morgan Cannon.
