Jessica Mobley of Colquitt, Ga., is a junior accounting major at Thomas University and an Air Force veteran. She is also one of 125 student veterans chosen from more than 1,000 chapters of the Student Veterans Association to attend the SVA Leadership Institute held last month in Bentonville, Ark.

To be selected for this honor, Mobley, who serves as vice president for TU’s chapter of SVA, submitted an application and résumé.  As one of the 125 participants selected, Mobley attended the all-expenses-paid institute held June 26-29 at Wal-Mart Corporate Headquarters, where she learned about professional development through the themes of strategic planning, collaborative integration, advanced chapter management techniques, and networking and professional etiquette.

“Ours is a new SVA chapter and needed guidance,” Mobley said. “By attending the institute, I learned a lot about how to recruit new members and how to collaborate. I was able to connect with other SVA leaders. I just learned so much from hearing their stories and learning about what they do.”

Right now TU has about 25 members in the SVA chapter that started earlier in 2014.

“We want to reach out more and help other student veterans transition from active duty to the classroom setting,” Mobley said. “I would like to see more members become more involved, hold more fundraisers, and help support other organizations.”

Mobley will continue representing TU’s SVA chapter at other national events. In September she’ll attend the SVA Leadership Summit in Atlanta, where she will learn about writing business plans.
