Bainbridge Public Safety is investigating two unrelated cases involving illegal drugs, which led to two arrests.
On June 4, Public Safety officers arrested Lorenzo Tate, 51, of 143 Pine Ridge Drive, Bainbridge, at the Hutto-McIver apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. BPS had been investigating Tate for alleged drug sales for approximately a year, Investigator Chip Nix said.
“We had surveillance video of him making what we believe were drug transactions and we had also arrested one of his buyers,” Nix said. “When we made contact with him at Hutto-McIver, [Tate] had crack cocaine and marijuana on his person.”
Tate was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of public housing, sale of cocaine, possession of marijuana (misdemeanor).
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Tate served two stints in state prison in the late 1990s on Decatur County convictions for possession of cocaine. Nix was the arresting officer in one of those previous cases in 1998, records show.
State trooper finds money and drugs in traffic stop
Georgia State Trooper First Class John Kirkus is credited with making a traffic stop that led to an arrest of a Tallahassee man on drug charges Monday night, according to BPS Investigator Ryan Deen, who is looking into the case.
Kurtis Emmanuel Miller, 36, of 1661 Lonnie Road, Tallahassee, Fla., was pulled over for speeding in Bainbridge by Trooper Kirkus at around 7 p.m. Monday night. After spotting an open container of alcohol, the state trooper searched Miller’s vehicle and found suspected marijuana inside.
Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to assist Kirkus and Sgt. Jason Williams of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, who has a K-9 search dog partner, also helped with the stop.
Investigator Deen said officers also found a large amount of U.S. currency in Miller’s vehicle.
Miller was charged with illegal possession of controlled substance, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, driving while license suspended/revoked, drugs to be kept in original container, open container and speeding.
