The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association has awarded Dr. Eugene Maddox of Cairo, Ga. with the 2015 J.T. Mercer Lifetime Achievement Award, the association’s highest honor. The award was presented to Maddox during the GVMA’s annual meeting in Atlanta on Nov. 7.
The J.T. Mercer Lifetime Achievement Award honors veterinarians who personify exemplary leadership and service in the veterinary profession. Recipients of this award are those who: have spent a lifetime of devotion and service to the care of animals; understand the importance of the human-animal bond; and have made unyielding contributions to the veterinary profession with their focus on continuing education.
“Dr. Maddox epitomizes what all veterinarians should strive to be,” said Laura Smallwood, association president. “Veterinary medicine is a service profession, and no one has served his patients, clients and his constituents of South Georgia better than Dr. Maddox.”
Gene Maddox was also the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association’s “Veterinarian of the Year in 2006. Among many other civic leadership positions, Maddox served in the Georgia Legislature from 2005-2012, representing all of Grady County and part of Decatur County.
