Last season, the Bainbridge High School varsity football team played Thomas County Central twice during the season–with Bainbridge losing during the regular season but getting the best of the TCC Yellow Jackets in a tie-breaker game that decided who would fill a playoff spot.
Both teams have a lot to play for this year, in what has become a bit of a rivalry because of the two teams’ winning ways in recent years. For Bainbridge, it’s a chance to go 4-0 and make a statement that the Bearcats are perhaps the very best football team in Georgia Region 1-AAAA. For Thomas County Central, it’s a chance to get revenge on the Bearcats for keeping the Yellow Jackets out of the playoffs last year and make their own case for superiority in the region.

Bainbridge High School Head Football Coach Jeff Littleton was a special guest on the Jesus and Jammin’ morning radio show on Thursday and talked about his hopes for the game. First, he said both the coaches and players have appreciate the fan support so far this season and hope the Bainbridge stands will be filled to capacity with loud, cheering fans.
Second, Coach Littleton stressed that the coaches were keeping the players focused on taking the season one game at a time. (The last time the Bearcats started the season 4-0 was in the 1980s.)
“We’ve played well so far and were able to beat a good defensive team in the Monroe Tornadoes last Friday,” Littleton said. “But we can’t get ahead of ourselves and look past any of our opponents. Certainly not Thomas County Central, because they always have good athletes and will be competing hard.”
The Bearcats have been good on both offense and defense, though it’s obvious from looking at the stats that the Bearcats’ three offensive weapons–quarterback Brent McLaughlin, running back Dameon Pierce and wide receiver Tyler Storey–have excelled so far this season.
Coach Littleton accepted a check for $200 from First National Bank in Bainbridge, which is showing support for the Bearcats in part by rewarding the team boosters with $50 for each touchdown the team scores each week. First National Bank CEO Brad Barber said he is looking forward to the home game versus Thomas County Central and was wearing his purple and gold tie already on Thursday. (All of First National’s employees wear purple and gold on game Fridays and the Shotwell Street bank is also adorned with purple and gold ribbons).
Coach Littleton also announced the Bainbridge High School football players of the week from the Monroe game.
The Bearcats’ Offensive Player of the Week is senior tight end Russell Wheeler, who had four catches for 46 yards and one touchdown. Wheeler also had five pancake blocks on the offensive line.
The Bearcats’ Defensive Player of the Week is junior defensive back Kerenski Williams, who had five tackles against Monroe, including three tackles that caused losses in yardage. Williams also had an interception and a pass break-up.
The Bearcats’ Special Team Player of the Week is Christian Glover, who is an offensive and defensive lineman.
The Bearcat Award, which is given each week to recognize a player for off-the field efforts in the classroom or being a leader at practice, is junior offensive lineman Jordan Fleming.
