Tropical Storm Erika, currently still out in the Atlantic, continued to head westward toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, August 26. The National Weather Service said its Hurricane Hunter weather aircraft was flying toward the storm to investigate the strength of the storm. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Erika was heading west at 17 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 47 miles per hour.
The current forecast has TS Erika headed toward the southeast coast of Florida and the city of Miami. However, the storm isn’t expected to reach the U.S. until Monday or Tuesday of next week, so forecasters will continue to watch the storm to see where it heads. It is interesting that some of the early computer model forecasts have the tropical storm headed for the Gulf of Mexico, so we will have to wait and see if Erika could bring rain to North Florida and South Georgia.
