Beginning on October 1 st , 2019, the Southern Regional Technical College’s (SRTC) Division of Economic Development in Bainbridge will launch an exciting hands-on career training opportunity. Dr. Amy Ryan will be heading up an eight-week long Pharmacy Technician Program at SRTC- Bainbridge. Dr. Ryan has been training technicians for over a decade in Thomasville, but fall of 2019 will be the first opportunity to take part in the program in Bainbridge.
Pharmacy Technicians assist Pharmacists in dispensing prescription medication to customers or
fellow health professionals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for Pharmacy
Technicians has been growing steadily for over a decade, and is projected to continue to grow at
a rate of 12% nationwide. “Healthcare is always growing so as the population gets older – as we
all get older – our need for medications increases. It’s a great field,” said SRTC Pharmacy
Technician Instructor, Dr. Amy Ryan.
This comprehensive fifty-hour program will prepare students to work in retail or clinical
pharmacy settings and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) exam.
Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy
practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions,
inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Registration is open now.
As a non-credit program, students are not required to apply as an SRTC student. If eligible,
WIOA may be able to offer financial assistance.
