Former Midway Police Chief Shot in the Line of Duty in Atlanta

A former chief of police for the City of Midway was shot Monday while investigating a fight in Fulton County.  Jerome Turner, Jr. was hired in March of 2013 as the interim Chief of Police for the City of Midway and promoted to the permanent role in November of that same year.  At the time of his pinning, Turner was the youngest police chief in the State of Florida.

Union City, GA (April 2, 2019) – On Monday, April 1, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Union City Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:56 pm, Union City PD Officer Jerome Turner, Jr. was dispatched to a call regarding a fight on Stonewall Dr.  Officer Turner was following up on leads in the case which took him to the 6200 block of Highpoint Road.  At 6:14 pm, Officer Turner notified 911 dispatch he was chasing a subject, later identified as Veltavious T. Griggs, age 19, and that Griggs had brandished a gun.  Dispatch then lost contact with Officer Turner.

Additional Union Point PD officers arrived and found Officer Turner and Griggs had been shot.  Griggs was deceased on scene.  Officer Turner had been shot several times, but was alert and talking.  He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is out of surgery and stable.

A gun was found on scene.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
