Lowndes was never able to get over the hump and get over its troubles against Thomas County Central on Tuesday, as Lowndes fell 8-7 in Valdosta after falling behind by six runs in the second inning.
Lowndes scored on a solo home run by Hedgecock in the second inning, a walk by Merritt in the fourth inning, an RBI double by Irvin and an RBI single by Hedgecock in the fifth inning, and a three-run home run by Irvin in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Lowndes wasn’t able to take the lead back.
It was a good day at the plate for Thomas County Central senior catcher Payton Burton. Burton went 3-4, drove in one and scored one run. She singled in the first, second, and fifth innings.
Larran Carter was the winning pitcher for Thomas County Central. Carter struck out one, walked five and gave up seven hits.
Fowler ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She allowed seven runs in five innings, walked one and struck out two.
The game’s last lead went to the Lady Yellow Jackets, thanks to a first inning rally that saw three runs cross the plate on a two-run double by Christina Ansley and an RBI single by Carter.
Thomas County Central piled on three more runs in the top of the second. The inning got off to a hot start when Katelyn Hobbs singled, plating Hannah Johnson.
The Lady Yellow Jackets increased their lead with two runs in the fifth. A hit into a fielder’s choice scored Kenlie Harvey for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Victoria Parker’s single, bringing home Madeline Parker.
Thomas County Central hosts Colquitt County on August 12 at 5 p.m.
