Around Our Area: New Colquitt County High School is one of largest schools in South Georgia

cchs ribbon cuttingStudents and parents will get into the school, located on Darbyshire and Doc Darbyshire roads, when the school holds its open house Thursday. The event will be 3-7 p.m.

 Students will get their schedules and receive a variety of paperwork to complete. It will be their first chance to meet with teachers as classes gear up to open the following Monday.

The community as a whole is invited to the second open house event — a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. Official tours are planned during that event.

Construction began in October 2013 on the 368,636-square-foot building. It’s rumored to be the largest high school between Macon and the Florida line, but Principal Stephanie Terrell said she can’t confirm that.

Smooth sailing on first day of school in Thomas County

THOMASVILLE — Considering that more than 8,000 local children returned to school Monday, the situation was ripe for any number of catastrophes.

However, heads of Thomasville City and Thomas County school systems reported smooth sailing.
