Cannon Restored and Returned to Bainbridge’s Willis Park

Cannon 18 Feb 2015News Release

The City of Bainbridge received a wonderful gift on Friday, Feb. 13 from Mr. C. A. “Bullet” Rykard of Hahira, Ga. “Bullet” donated his time, labor, and materials to restore the cannon in Willis Park.

The cannon was meticulously cleaned, and a new carriage was constructed with wheels hand-made by the Amish and shipped to Georgia from Pennsylvania. It was discovered that the cannon was originally manufactured by the Ames Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1850.

We are thrilled to accept this gift from Mr. Rykard and a formal ceremony is being planned for April.

If you have old photos, postcards, or information about when the cannon was moved to Willis Park or where it was moved from, please contact Julie Harris with the City of Bainbridge at 229-243-8555.
