Members of the Decatur County 4-H Shotgun team were recognized at the May 13 meeting of the Decatur County Board of Commissioners for their participation in district and state events.

On April 10, 2014, Decatur County 4-H hosted the 4-H Shotgun District Qualification Match. Over eighty 4-H students from Seminole, Grady and Decatur Counties participated in the prerequisite shooting bout to determine eligibility for the State Target Challenge Weekend to be held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center on May 9 – 10, 2014. Qualification requirements for Junior members (seventh and eighth grade) include breaking 16 out of 25 clays and Senior members (high school) hitting 20 of the 25 targets.

All Decatur County team members met the requirements to advance to the state level with 7th grader Hunter Pelham placing 3rd in the Junior division and Senior members, Colby Boyett and Spencer Shreves placing 1st and 2nd respectively in the Senior category.

Junior members that will be competing at the 4-H Target Challenge Weekend at Rock Eagle are Hudson Barber, Blake Daughtry, Brannon Fagan, Calen Greene, Jake Jones, Carlton Lynn, John Willis Maples and Hunter Pelham. Senior participants competing in May are Tyler Allen, Colby Boyett, Matthew Boyett, Nicholas Boyett, Landen Bryant, Kyle Funderburke, Brenden Greene, Britt Jones, Ryan Jordan, Dustin Moore, Luke McConnell, Chason Phillips, Daniel Poitevint and Spencer Shreves.

Team members have been practicing diligently each week since February under the guidance of dedicated volunteer coaches. Coaches for the Decatur County 4-H Shotgun Team are Gary Phillips, Zane Allen and Wayne Poitevint.

The Georgia 4-H Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education Program (S.A.F.E.) is sponsored by The Georgia 4-H Foundation. 4-H is the youth development program of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
