The fire appears to have started as a trash fire that spread to the home.  There were no reported injuries.

9:45 a.m.:

Smoke was visible from the Bainbridge Bypass as first responders battled a blaze in Bainbridge Wednesday.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion as far as a mile away and black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky above the Bainbridge Bypass as first responders battled a blaze in West Bainbridge.  Law enforcement on the scene stated that an old house and barn off of Church Street caught fire just after 9:00 a.m.

The proximity to the industrial property along the Flint River, which was the scene of a deadly explosion in August of 2015, alarmed witnesses and concerned on-lookers about a repeat of that horrific chemical fire and explosion, however, today’s flames were contained to the residential area and not related to the industrial properties.

Bainbridge Public Safety, Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur County Fire and Rescue and City of Bainbridge employees are currently on the scene.

This is a developing story.  Please check back later for more details.
