The academy is free, and will provide an opportunity for citizens in the community to obtain an inside look at the Department of Public Safety. It is not designed for those interested in a law enforcement career, but rather for anyone seeking to gain a greater understanding of how the department operates, and of the problems and challenges faced by Public Safety Officers on a daily basis.
The first session of the ten week academy will be held on Tuesday, January 13 from 6 pm until 9 pm, and will meet every Tuesday through March 17. Attendees will receive 30 hours of instruction and information. Topics covered will include the “Use of Force” policy, laws of arrest, search and seizure issues, domestic violence, hiring and recruitment practices, and fire operations. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to tour the Decatur County Jail, ride on patrol with Public Safety officers, and participate in firearms education and instruction.
