Drive down Georgia 97 South in Decatur County, also known as the Jack Wingate Highway, to the village of Faceville and you’ll see hundreds of acres of tomatoes growing in the fields.
“It’s tomatoes that put Faceville on the map, so we thought we’d celebrate the tomato as well as our community spirit,” said Kyle Duke, whose sister Camille came up with the idea for the Faceville Tomato Festival, going on all day Saturday.
Ms. Christine Murray of Murray Farms will serve as the official tomato queen in the Tomato Festival Parade, which will be held along Georgia Highway 97 South starting at 9 a.m. Because it’s a well-traveled route to Lake Seminole and into North Florida, there will be some police escorting the revelers taking part in the parade.
The festival is being held across two locations: the Faceville Community Store, about 10 miles southwest of Bainbridge, and the nearby Faceville Baptist Church. More than 30 vendors and a variety of kids activities will be set up outside the church, while great BBQ will be served outside the store, which will also host three concerts in the afternoon and evening.
Some of the kids’ activities include horses brought by Hannatown Stables, a bounce house, a dunk tank in which people can try to splash well-known Faceville residents like Kyle Duke, a kids’ train ride and more.
The Faceville Tomato Festival will also feature some great music:
- Crooked Kilts, a band that plays Celtic/Irish rock, will take the stage between 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Custom Deluxe, a classic rock band, will perform from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Caliber, a classic country & classic rock band featuring musician Les O’Berry, will perform from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- At 7:30 p.m., there will be a 50/50 cash raffle drawing; you must be present to win.
