Envision Credit Union Awards Educational Grants to Three Local Schools

Funds will allow educators to further engage students with new projects

[Tallahassee, Fla.] – Envision Credit Union (Envision) recently announced the winners of their 2018 School Grant Contest, awarding $2,000 to each of the three local schools. The opportunity was offered to any school, public or private, within one of Envision’s twelve-county membership areas: Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, Wakulla, Franklin, Jackson, or Liberty counties in Florida and Decatur, Brooks, Mitchell, Grady, or Thomas counties in Georgia. Schools were encouraged to submit a grant proposal for an educational project in the categories of financial literacy, technology or community service. The proposals were expected to include specific goals as to how the project could impact the critical learning skills of students. With over 8,000 votes, the top three winners chosen were Cross Creek Elementary (Thomasville, GA), Whigham School (Whigham, GA) and DeSoto Trail Elementary (Tallahassee, FL).

Cross Creek Elementary will be using the grant to expand their outdoor classroom, providing a more engaging and natural learning environment for their students, with the intention to share this space with neighboring schools and grades. Whigham School’s goal is to focus on balanced literacy and with this grant they will integrate Flocabulary into their curriculum. This online program uses pop/rap music videos to explain difficult concepts to students, and will give the school’s entire population access to the benefits of interactive and energetic vocabulary practice. The final grant winner, Desoto Trail Elementary, will be using their grant money to go towards adding technology enhancements to their Sensory Room, a space that helps students get into a frame of mind where they can pay attention, focus, cooperate and develop social skills. While this project prioritizes the needs of students with disabilities, it also provides a resource that all students may use on an as-needed basis.

Envision recognizes the importance of innovative teaching and knows that educators are always looking for new ways to expand their school’s curriculum. The credit union is proud to have donated more than $60,000 in classroom grants since the program’s inception. These funds are meant to aid in the implementation of projects that will directly enhance local student’s learning opportunities.

Envision’s sustained commitment in providing grants to local schools is just one example of the credit union’s constant support for education. Founded by a group teachers in 1954 with a mission to support local educators, Envision has preserved those ideals through ongoing efforts that impact teachers, schools and students throughout its North Florida and South Georgia region.
