AMERICUS (December 14, 2015) | Senator Dean Burke (R- Bainbridge) delivered the commencement address to the last class of 2015 at his Alma Mater, Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday.
“Educated citizens are the first step to improving the quality of life in our region,” said Burke, who is an alumnus of Georgia Southwestern.
During his comments, Burke listed a series of habits he encouraged each graduate to develop as their life and careers progress. A few included: learning to live life with margin, learning to get out of your comfort zone and learning what is most important in your life so you know where to focus your time.
Lastly, Burke said “Leaving the world better than you found it is the ultimate definition of a life well lived.”
“It was an incredible honor to have the opportunity to speak to the future leaders of our state as they leave one chapter of their lives and enter into another,” said Sen. Burke. “I hope they can all see the impression they left on this incredible university and the impact they will have in their future endeavors. Being able to speak to my alma mater was a humbling experience that I hope I get to do again soon.”
“We are delighted that Sen. Burke returned to his alma mater to speak during Fall Commencement,” said GSW Interim President Charles Patterson, Ph.D. “He represents Georgia Southwestern well as a leader in Atlanta and in Southwest Georgia as an experienced physician, and our graduates greatly benefitted from his experience and message.”
