Bainbridge police investigating a shoplifting complaint at Wal-Mart ended up arresting the suspect on drug-related charges on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier on Tuesday, Wal-Mart security reported a man took a camouflage sweatshirt and several pairs of ear buds. Store surveillance video captured an image of the suspect, according to Bainbridge Public Safety investigator Mark Esquivel. BPS officers were able to identify the person on the video as Demarquez Monzell Wimberly of Palmetto Street in Bainbridge.
BPS Chief Investigator Larry Funderburke and Investigator Esquivel went looking for Wimberly and found him walking near the intersection of Hall Street and Green Street in Bainbridge.
Wimberly reportedly became upset after the officers approached him and attempted to swallow a handful of suspected marijuana, Esquivel said. The investigators had to briefly struggle with Wimberly before placing him under arrest.
The BPS investigators searched his person and found five plastic bags containing suspected marijuana, as well as a digital scale and empty plastic bags.
Demarquez Wimberly was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, obstruction of officers and misdemeanor shoplifting.
