Recently, the Bainbridge State College Foundation held its first Annual “Swing for Support” Golf Tournament, raising over $11,000 for Seminole County student scholarships.
The tournament will be held annually to raise funds specifically for students from a particular county. Without the participation and generosity of sponsors and players, the BSC Foundation would be unable to provide the financial assistance to Seminole County students.
All proceeds raised will benefit a new scholarship for Seminole County students in celebration of the upcoming Donalsonville Education Center.
Without scholarship opportunities such as this, some students would not have the opportunity to further their education.
Dr. Richard Carvajal, BSC President, said, “It’s amazing to see the community rally behind students’ education. By providing their support, they are helping to secure local students’ successes in education—and that speaks volumes for this community’s input in its future.”
Likewise, the extra assistance is having an impact on the region’s workforce. According to Marcus Carter of Lewis M. Carter Manufacturing (LMC), the company is excited to give back to the community through Bainbridge State College.
He said, “We are seeing this as a great opportunity to develop and keep educated and qualified people in Seminole County. This is not just an opportunity for LMC and its family of companies—but it’s also for Southwest Georgia. It’s all about mentoring and developing the young people in our area.”
The Tournament gained much support during its first year with 60 golfers participating.
Lauren Harrell, BSC Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, said, “The local support given by both Bainbridge and Donalsonville is a testament to how our community understands the need for scholarship dollars. In many cases, the BSC Foundation is the only hope for students who have a desire to further their education and need some extra help getting there.”
Additionally, the Tournament received a diverse group of sponsors, which included sponsorships at the following levels: Gold (LMC), Silver (Hardee’s/Ponder Enterprises), and Bronze (Stones, CGM Construction Group, American Peanut Growers).
Friendly team rivalries consisted of LMC, APG, The Friendship House, CGM Construction, Southwest Georgia Technical College, Sun South (sponsored a high school team), Bainbridge State College (provided two teams), DeHildren Realty, Quality Signs, Edward Jones, Stones HomeCenters, Donalsonville Country Club (two teams) and Commercial State Bank.
The following Tournament winners received cash prizes:
Gross winners– First Place: Edward Jones and Second Place: The Friendship House;
Net winners– First Place: CGM Construction Group, which donated the prize money back Bainbridge State College; and Second Place: Donalsonville Country Club;
Other awards– Closest to the Pin: Levi Overton of MHG in Bainbridge; and Longest Drive: Micah Elkins of Edward Jones in Thomasville.
