A Georgia State Patrol helicopter and state troopers from Southwest Georgia are conducting special patrols in Decatur County this weekend.
Their focus is a continued effort to keep motorists safe during late summer travel period, and also to help with increased local traffic associated with a music festival being held in Decatur County this weekend, GSP officials said.
State troopers from around Southwest Georgia have joined in with local law enforcement for road safety checkpoints earlier in the week and those will continue this weekend, Sgt. Marc Godby with GSP Troop G said.
On Friday afternoon, a helicopter with the Georgia State Patrol Aviation Unit landed on the helipad at the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office on Spring Creek Road. The pilot, based out of Perry, Ga., said he was conducting training with other troopers and helping monitor flow of any traffic associated with the music festival.
The goal is not necessarily to write traffic tickets, but rather to maintain a high visibility on area highways, to help remind bikers and drivers alike to watch their speed and wear their seatbelts and / or helmets, Sgt. Godby said.
