The Commodores enjoyed unprecedented success in the final two seasons under James Franklin when they won 18 games in two seasons. In first year head coach Derek Mason’s first season in Nashville, the ‘Dores struggled to find consistency at quarterback & regressed defensively but hopefully will be better in year two under defensive guru Mason.
Vanderbilt opens the season with three straight home games. The season opener will be against Western Kentucky, a team who racked up over 530 yards of offense per game in 2014 but will be looking for a replacement at quarterback. Week two brings SEC East opponent Georgia to town who will most likely still be searching for answers outside of the running back position on offense. The third game in the stretch in against FCS opponent Austin Peay who only won one game in 2014 at the FCS level.
Vanderbilt will close out the month of September with their first road game at the Grove against Ole Miss.
The month of October opens for Vanderbilt on the road against Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro before their bye week. After the bye week, Vanderbilt will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the Gamecocks followed by a home game against the Missouri Tigers. The Commodores will finish out the month on the road against the Houston Cougars & first year head coach Tom Herman, former offensive coordinator of the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes.
November is full of conference opponents as Vandy will begin the month on the road in the Swamp against the Florida Gators followed by back-to-back home games against Kentucky and Texas A&M. The Commodores will finish the month of November on the road in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers. Vanderbilt was outscored by those four opponents 75 to 34 in 2014.
Vanderbilt only won three ball games in 2014 and wasn’t very competitive in conference games. Head coach Derek Mason knew what kind of situation he was getting into and hopefully can get Vanderbilt at least back to a point where they can be competitive in the East. Either way, dodging Alabama, LSU & Mississippi State is a blessing from the SEC schedule gods.
