Decatur County Schools held their first-ever STEM Design Fair at the Kirbo Center on the campus of Bainbridge State College Thursday night.
STEM stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math” and has been a focus of what students study in the classroom in recent years. The idea is to integrate all four disciplines into learning that has a practical application and will hopefully give students a leg up in the competitive job market after they graduate.
The STEM Design Fair is similar to the science fairs of old, but many more students participate and use a variety of skills to create their projects. Children and youth in grades K-12 from all 8 Decatur County Schools participated.
Some of the more creative exhibits included organic gardens, miniature windmills, solar-powered ovens, an exhibit showing the effects of water pollution and even a working prototype of a small hovercraft.

Several community organizations who sponsored the STEM Fair also had informational displays at the Kirbo Center. The sponsors included Bainbridge State College, Bainbridge Farmer’s Market, BASF, Coca-Cola, Decatur County 4-H, Home Depot, Miles Realty and Seaborn Printing.
