One-year-old Braxton Givens of Bainbridge is being treated for a serious head injury at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, according to the Georgia State Patrol and family posts on Facebook.
The accident happened on February 16 at 6:46 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 84 West and Cooler Road in Decatur County.
Zach Givens of Bainbridge, was driving his family in a Dodge Caravan minivan. Givens was driving south on Cooler Road and stopped at the intersection. As Givens attempted to cross U.S. 84, he drove into the path of a GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by William “Andy” Bell of Climax, Ga., which who was traveling east in the right lane on U.S. 84.
Givens stated to the state trooper that he was unable to see Bell’s pickup truck approaching; the official time of sunset was 6:26 p.m., just prior to the accident.
Bell’s pickup truck struck the Givens’ mini-van on its right passenger side, causing the mini-van to spin off the highway, where it struck a road sign and then a power pole before coming to rest on the north side of the highway.
According to an accident report, Braxton Givens was in a child safety seat on the right hand side of the mini-van’s second seat. He was later transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by an emergency medical helicopter.
Zach Givens was not injured. His wife, Taylor Givens, and the couple’s two twin boys, aged 3, had non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge by ambulance.
Bell reported chest pain and went to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge by private vehicle.
