Spotlight on Local Business: New South Roofing

“Our roof was recently replaced by New South Roofing, and we are very pleased with the outcome. The workers did a great job, and were very efficient. They also finished the project quickly, which was very much appreciated. When the roof was complete, the men did an excellent job cleaning up, and did not leave behind any debris or tools behind. Our new roof looks great, and we would definitely recommend using New South Roofing to anyone.” – Lisa G.

In our latest edition of Spotlight on Local Business, we talked to Jackson Dodd about his business, New South Roofing.

On October 10, 2018, Southwest Georgia and North Florida were hit by Hurricane Michael, one of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall in the continental United States. Even after making landfall and travelling more than 100 miles inland, Michael brought winds in excess of 100 miles per hour to southwest Georgia.  Homes in Bainbridge were destroyed and residents went a week, in some cases more, with no power. In the aftermath, New South Roofing tarped about 500 roofs in a matter of just three weeks. Although they had opportunities to work in the more heavily damaged areas at the coast, Jackson made the decision to keep their work local. Considering they had no phones or way of communication, it was chaotic.

When asked how they got it all done, Jackson simply said, “Luckily, we didn’t get any more rain for a few weeks after the hurricane because we would’ve had to start all the way over if we would’ve gotten anymore.”

With the incredible volume of work to be done, Jackson and his crew worked seven days a week until February of this year. “I am very blessed with the team and the crew that I have, because they were willing to work and to help our small town with the damage that had been done.”

New South Roofing has a reputation for quick, yet efficient roof repairs, roof replacements, roof inspections, and residential roofing.  They cover the Northwest Florida and Southwest Georgia area, and provide excellent service, including an emergency leak number for hospitals. New South Roofing officially opened about four years ago, but they boast more than 50 years of combined roofing experience. Leaders are regularly involved in training courses, certifications, and other forms of continued education. New South Roofing is known for being actively involved in supporting community activities as well as programs that teach the importance of environmentally sound practices.  They provide roof inspection services and are very familiar with the different types of roofing: asphalt shingles, metal, and tile.

So how did they get into the business? Jackson Dodd started working with New South Systems, a company that specializes in flat roofs, when he was in high school. When he graduated high school, he continued to work with New South Systems and eventually formed a partnership that spawned New South Roofing. Jackson, his sister, his brother, and his childhood best friend, have made New South Roofing a “family owned business.”

What has the workload been like? Since October 10, New South has performed around 400 re-roofs.  That’s between 10-14 roofs per week. They want to make sure that they get the job done quickly, but not too quickly, because they want their work to be efficient and done right. Every employee they have goes through the proper training and they live by the phrase “Practice makes perfect.”
