GBI: Covington Police Officer Shot after Chasing Shoplifting Suspect

PRESS RELEASE

Covington, GA (September 3, 2018) –  On Monday, September 3, 2018, the Covington Police Department requested the GBI to investigate a shooting incident that resulted in serious injuries to Covington Officer Matt Cooper, age 34, and the death of Aaron Demonta Fleming, age 21.

Preliminary information indicates that on September 3, 2018, at approximately 12:24 PM, Covington Police responded to 10300 Industrial Blvd at Walmart in reference to a shoplifting incident.  Officers were advised that a male was seen exiting the store with a bag in his hand.

Officer Cooper made contact with Fleming and a foot chase ensued.  Fleming ran across the street behind another shopping center where several gunshots were fired.  Officer Cooper was hit by gunfire and airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center.  Fleming sustained a fatal gunshot wound.  Early information indicates that the wound was self-inflicted.

Officer Cooper remains in serious condition.

A multitude of other agencies also reached out to offer assistance.

The GBI investigation remains active and ongoing.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Alcovy Judicial Circuit for review.
