SPORTS: Basketball – GCA Wins Region, State Champs fall in first round of Playoffs, and More!

The State Playoffs are underway for the high schools in our area with several schools making a run at the State Title.  Here are the results so far:

 

A Classification

Grace Christian Academy (Private)

After two great basketball games on Friday, both GCA teams will advance to the GISA State Tournament this week. The Lady Cougars will play Oak Mountain tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in Jefferson, GA.  The boys team won on Friday night and earned the title of Region Champs, and they will get to play their 1st round at home.  They will play Brandon Hall on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Bainbridge State College.

Mitchell County High School (Public)

The Mitchell County Lady Eagles fell in the first round to Calhoun County on February 19.

Calhoun County (Boys Defending State Champs and Current Region Champs)

The Calhoun County Boys Basketball team defeated Clinch County in the first round of the state playoffs by a score of 57-47.  They will face Turner County on February 26.

The Calhoun County Girls Basketball team defeated Mitchell County 42-39 and will face fellow Region 1-A school Terrell County in the second round on Friday, February 26 as well.

AA Classification

Pelham High School (Girls Region Champs)

The Pelham High School Lady Hornets are rolling in the GHSA State Playoffs so far with convincing victories over Lamar County and Manchester.  The Lady Hornets defeated their first two opponents by a combined score of 126 – 50.  They are slated to face Holy Innocents Episcopal in the Quarterfinals on Friday, February 26 at 3:00 p.m.

Thomasville High School (Boys Region Champs)

The Lady Bulldogs were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by Bleckley County by a score of 33-23.

The Boys team defeated Lamar County and Union County in the first two rounds of the GHSA playoffs and will face Pace Academy on Friday in the state Quarterfinals.

Early County High School

The Early County Boys High School Basketball team defeated Macon County in the first round before falling to Manchester in the second.

Seminole County High School (Defending State Champs)

The Seminole County Indians Basketball team lost in the first round to Crawford County by a score of 95-64.

AAAA Classification

Bainbridge High School

Bainbridge High School Boys made it to the second round of the GHSA Playoffs before being bounced by Sandy Creek 85-71. The Bearcats defeated Eagle’s Landing in the first round by a score of 80-49.

Bainbridge High School Girls have advanced to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Playoffs and will face Wayne County on Thursday, February 25 for a chance to advance to the Final Four.  The BHS Lady Cats have defeated Jonesboro and North Oconee on their playoff march thus far.

Other Region 1-AAAA Notables

Monroe Boys (region champs) have advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating both Walnut Grove and Fayette County.  Westover has advanced to the Elite Eight as well by beating Eastside and Woodward Academy.
