Bainbridge High School Varsity Soccer teams take two from Brooks County

The State bound Bainbridge High School girls and boys varsity soccer teams concluded their regular season play by defeating both the Brooks County Lady Trojans and Trojans last Tuesday night in Quitman.

In the girls contest Bainbridge scored five first half goals in route to a 6-0 victory.

The Lady Bearcats struck quickly by scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead.

Bainbridge Sophomore Forward Ilean Marquez pounced on a loose ball at midfield and dribbled past the Lady Trojan defense and scored from six yards away to give the Lady Cats their first goal in the second minute.

In the 5th minute Sophomore midfielder Summer Boyd lined up to take a corner kick on the left side and then lofted a kick that curled inward and was placed into the far post of the goal for the second score.

Bainbridge stretched the lead at 3-0 in the 20th minute as Senior Defender Rebecca Mulkey scored from six yards out. Senior defender Honorina Barrios sent a pass to Mulkey , who then dribbled and swerved through the Lady Trojan defense before taking the scoring shot.

In the 28th minute Sophomore Midfielder Aida Diaz Gonzalas got outside the Brooks County defense and then sent a well placed pass in the center to teammate Elizabeth Brinson who shot and scored from eight yards away to extend the lead at 4-0.

The fifth goal, of the first half, came in the 34th minute as Junior utility player Derrical Williams intercepted a pass and split two defenders before scoring from close range to give the Lady Bearcats a 5-0 advantage at the half.

The final score, which came in the 42nd minute of the second half, was the result of a drop pass from Mulkey on a breakaway to teammate Sophomore Midfielder Haley Thompson, who quickly shot and scored from 8 yards out.

The Lady Bearcats finish the regular season with a 10-7 record overall and a 7-3 region record placing them in 4th place in the Region. Bainbridge edged out Worth County, who also finished at 7-3 in the region, but received the spot due to the region, head to head tie breaker rule, when they defeated the Lady Rams 2-0 on April 10th .

Bainbridge will travel to Veteran’s High School in the first round of the state playoffs on Tuesday, April 28 with game time set at 6 pm.

BHS boys rout Brooks County, 9-0

The Bainbridge High School Bearcats scored all nine of their goals in the first half, in a 9-0 victory over the Brooks County Trojans Tuesday night.

Bainbridge jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest with two goals by Junior Midfielder Jaycee Castro.

The first goal came in the third minute as Senior Midfielder Michael Bush crossed a pass to the center that was then followed up by Castro from ten yards out.

Castro again scored in the ninth minute, as Sophomore midfielder Misael Rodriguez sent a long pass over the Brooks County defense and in front of Castro who scored on a breakaway.

Junior Midfielder Jesus Contreras scored the third goal as he received a pass from Castro in the 13th minute, and then preceded to shoot and score from the top of the Trojan penalty area giving the Bearcats a three goal lead.

Contreras assisted, on Bainbridge’s fourth goal, as he sent a pass to Sophomore Forward Leroy Rivera who broke free on a breakaway and then scored on a shot from six yards out, in the 19th minute, increasing the score at 4-0.

Bainbridge went up 5-0, in the 23rd minute, as Castro scored his third goal on the night, when Rivera sent a through pass to him resulting in a breakaway, and ended with a shot in the penalty area for the score.

Bainbridge scored their final four goals in the last nine minutes of the first half.

Rivera tallied two more breakaway goals from assists by Rodriguez in the 31st and 36th minute, while senior midfielder Mauricio Granados and Senior defender Alex Ward rounded out the scoring converting goals in the 32nd and 39th minute respectfully.

The Bearcats, who are 11-6 on the season overall and 7-3 in region, will travel for the first round of the State 4A playoffs, next Wednesday, April 29 to Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, game time is set for 6:30 pm.
