Bainbridge Bearcats varsity basseball team won the hit battle 6-4 on Wednesday, but couldn’t push enough runs across to get the win, instead losing 7-4 in seven innings to Cairo at Bearcat Field.
Blake Merchant reached base three times in the game for Bainbridge. He also drove in one runner. He singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the sixth inning.
BHS starting pitcher Ty Varnum baffled Cairo, striking out six batters. Varnum allowed three earned runs, three hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings.
Cairo was sparked by Cage Cox and Koby Pyrz, who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs.
Cairo stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring four runs on an error and an RBI single by Pyrz.
After pushing across one run in the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats faced just a 7-1 deficit. An RBI double by Merchant triggered Bainbridge’s comeback.
Three runs in the bottom of the seventh helped Bainbridge close its deficit to 7-4. A two-run double by Keith Lyle and an error sparked Bainbridge Bearcats Varsity’s rally. Cairo’s Cox induced a Merchant fly out to close things out.
