Community groups in Bainbridge and Cairo will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19.
Although King’s birthday is January 15, it is being observed as a state and federal holiday on January 19.
In Bainbridge, an opening ceremony for King’s birthday observance will be held at the Decatur County Courthouse at 9:45 a.m. Following a program, at approximately 10:30 a.m., participants will march/parade from the courthouse to Hutto Middle School on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
A memorial program will be held at Hutto Middle School in Bainbridge at 11:45 a.m. Monday, featuring music and speakers.
This year’s guest speaker will be Rashad Taylor, a former Georgia state representative who is now a political consultant. Taylor has worked on the campaigns for Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and former U.S. Congressman John Barrow. Taylor is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Cairo group to observe MLK Jr.’s birthday
The Martin Luther King Jr. Collaborative in Cairo has planned several activities to honor Dr. King on Monday.
The day will begin with a parade through downtown Cairo starting at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial program to be held at Holder Park at noon.
The organizing officials are asking churches, schools, businesses and organizations to have a float or entry in the parade by calling Douglas Addison at (229) 377-0984.
The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘The Mind of a Dreamer.”

Church to hold MLK Jr. program
A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program will be held at the Shiloh No. 1 M.B. Church, 157 Shiloh Road in Grady County, on Sunday, Jan. 18 starting at 5 p.m. The Rev. Nathaniel Trumpet and the Antioch M.B. Church of Quincy will be in charge of the service.
