Two Bainbridge men were arrested Saturday night after they attempted to evade a road safety checkpoint and officers witnessed them throw drugs out of their car, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, state troopers from the Georgia State Patrol’s Colquitt, Ga., post were holding a road safety checkpoint along with Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies at the intersection of Whigham Dairy Road and Old Whigham Road in Bainbridge.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., officers watched as a brown Chevrolet Malibu headed east on MLK Jr. Drive, which turns into Old Whigham Road. The driver of the Malibu, later identified as 37-year-old Derrick Dewayne Jones, 37, of 1031 MLK Jr. Drive, Bainbridge, quickly turned into the driveway of a residence, said Trooper First Class John Kirkus.

State troopers, sensing the car was attempting to avoid the road block, followed after the car, and troopers saw something being thrown out of the car, Kirkus said.

Kirkus and fellow State Trooper Meed Kelley gave chase on foot as Derrick Jones and his brother, Dewaun Monte Jones, 33, of 717 Albany Road, exited the car and ran behind the residence.

“We ran up on them pretty fast after we saw the car turn into the driveway, they appeared to be looking to get away but we were able to take them into custody,” Kirkus said. “The owner of the home said he didn’t know either man and said they didn’t have permission to be there.”

Derrick Jones, who was driving, admitted to troopers that he had smoked marijuana earlier that evening and had a small baggie of marijuana on his person, according to Kirkus. There was also an odor like that of burnt marijuana inside the car. Dewaun Jones, the passenger, was visibly intoxicated and was holding a small amount of suspected crack cocaine in his hand, the trooper said.

In the yard next to the residence, officers found a number of small plastic baggies containing suspected cocaine, said Kirkus, who said there may have been as much as 10 grams of cocaine in the bags.
