The Seminoles held their first practice in full pads of fall camp on Friday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 1 Florida State held its first practice in full pads on Friday at the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility.
The Seminoles had a spirited practice during which portions where held indoors because of inclement weather. There were plenty of big plays, but head coach Jimbo Fisher said the practice lacked the typical consistent flow.
“A very up and down practice,” Fisher said. “It wasn’t a typical practice. The energy was good but there was too much of either the offense making great plays or defense making great plays. No consistency in between. We need to play with more consistency. I’d like to see it a little more physical at times, too. But other than that, we did some good things on both sides of the ball. But not enough consistency today.”
Several players have cross-trained throughout the first week of camp at different positions and that continued on Friday. Sophomore safety Jalen Ramsey continues to take reps at cornerback and also saw action as a kick returner.
The Seminoles return on Saturday with their first two-a-day practice of fall camp.
Quick Notes
Redshirt senior tight end Kevin Haplea sat out of practice with a concussion and freshman wide receiver Travis Rudolph had a scheduled day off to continue recovery from a summer injury.
Media Day and Fan Day Sunday
On Sunday, the Seminoles will take the annual team photo and meet with local and national media in the morning before heading to the Donald L. Tucker Center for the annual Fan Day at Noon. Doors will be open at 11 a.m. and parking is free.
Following Fan Day, there will be an open practice inside Doak Campbell Stadium. Gates to the stadium will open at 3:30 p.m. and practice will begin at approximately 4 p.m.
Gate C will be the only open gate to the stadium and limited concessions will be available in that area. Lower-level restrooms inside Gate C will be available for fans. Admission and parking at Doak Campbell Stadium is free.
If weather forces practice to be moved to the indoor practice facility, it will be closed to the public.
“We are excited about that,” Fisher said. “It lets the guys see how much people really appreciate them and the impact they have on all the folks. We have to give back to them. We have a great fan base. We’ll have a practice out there in the stadium if the rain holds off. If not, we’ll come in here. It’ll let the fans see the players and have a good workout for them. I love Fan Day. I think it is a great time and experience to see all the little kids and see their faces when they see the players and coaches and all that stuff. I think it is very special.”

Opening Statement

On if the lack of consistency was due to it being the first day in full pads:
“No. They are in shells and pads and pads have nothing to do with it. I’m not mad about it, and that’s not an excuse, I mean, we just didn’t play with consistency. I hate to say that because that’s the first time I’ve had to say that in a long time. I don’t like saying that. But it’s the facts of what we did.”
On the upcoming Fan Day on Sunday:

On how quarterback Jameis Winston has looked:
“I think he has been solid. I don’t think he has been poor at all, but he could still be a little more consistent on things. I think he is getting used to some new folks around him, you know what I’m saying? But we are working on some other things and different things in the offense and expanding our roles with what we are doing. I have been very pleased with his practice but I think even he can step it up.”
On the linebackers:
“The linebackers got to be more consistent. They have been solid, but I think they need to play with a little more urgency at times.”
On moving safety Jalen Ramsey around:
“We’re moving them all. Not just him, we are moving all those guys. We’re cross training those guys everywhere inside to create matchups.”
On biggest advantages of defensive linemen with so much size:
“Vision. And getting off blocks. It is hard to move them. Even if they get blocked they can reach over you. When they are getting blocked in a pass rush they can get a hand up to deflect the ball or even just make you have sight or vision problems. Some people don’t understand about quarterbacks when you say that that guy’s open. When you stand back and all of a sudden on the line of scrimmage you have some 6-6 guys, and even though they are being blocked, their hands are in the passing lane and make you throw the ball high or around them. That length can really matter. Those young guys are doing a good job.”
