URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL 241 AM EST TUE NOV 18 2014 ...FREEZE WARNING THIS MORNING FOR SOUTHEAST ALABAMA...SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA...AND MUCH OF THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE... ...HARD FREEZE WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING FOR THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA AWAY FROM THE IMMEDIATE COAST... .AN UNUSUALLY COLD AIR MASS FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR IS POURING INTO THE REGION IN THE WAKE OF A COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE. TEMPERATURES WILL BE BELOW FREEZING FOR SEVERAL HOURS THIS MORNING ACROSS THE NORTHWESTERN THIRD OF THE FORECAST AREA. WHILE THIS WILL BE A LIGHT FREEZE...A HARD FREEZE IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING. A FREEZE WARNING MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS MAY DAMAGE CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION. A HARD FREEZE WARNING MEANS TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 20S OR LOWER ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS CAN BE EVEN MORE HARMFUL TO VEGETATION. EXPOSED PIPES ARE AT RISK WHEN TEMPERATURES FALL TO 20 DEGREES OR BELOW.
Residents and visitors should remember the “Five P’s” of cold weather safety. The “5 P’s” are: Protecting People, Protecting Plants, Protecting Pets, Protecting Exposed Pipes, and Practicing Fire Safety.
The following actions are important safety measures:
* Stay indoors and use safe heating sources.
* Be aware of the fire danger from space heaters and candles. Keep such devices away from all flammable materials such as curtains and furniture, and install recommended smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Indoors: Do not use charcoal or other fuel-burning devices, such as grills that produce carbon monoxide. Install at least one carbon monoxide detector per floor in your home.
Outdoors: Stay dry and in wind-protected areas.
Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing.
Drink non-alcoholic fluids.
Shelter or bring animals inside, especially pets.
