Acclaimed poet C. G. Hanzlicek will visit Bainbridge State College on Thursday, November 6, 4:30 p.m. Hanzlicek will give a craft lecture for aspiring writers. A reading from his work will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a book signing. Both events will be held in Room 952 of the Student Wellness Center on campus and are free and open to the public.
Hanzlicek received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1964 and a M.F.A. from the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1986. He is the author of nine books of poetry: Living in It, Stars (winner of the 1977 Devins Award for Poetry), Calling the Dead, A Dozen for Leah, When There Are No Secrets, Mahler: Poems and Etchings, Against Dreaming, The Cave: New and Selected Poems, and most recently The Lives of Birds.
He has translated Native American songs, A Bird’s Companion, and poems from the Czech, Mirroring: Selected Poems of Vladimir Holan, which won the Robert Payne Award from the Columbia University Translation Center in 1985. Longtime director of the creative writing program at California State University, Fresno, Hanzlicek retired in 2001.
“The new work, in particular, recommends the poet’s strengths: honesty, clarity, humor, and a singular gift for a natural and personable spoken idiom almost forgotten in contemporary poetry culture committed to the language of artifice,” fellow poet Stanley Plumly wrote in a review of the 2001 collection The Cave, which reprises selections from the poet’s work over the previous quarter-century and introduces nearly 20 new poems. “Hanzlicek’s ear perfects not only his voice but the heart it listens to.”
The event is the first of three poets from the 2014-15 Georgia Poetry Circuit as part of the BSC Carter Arts and Lecture Series. Noah Blaustein (Flirt) and Shole Wolpé (Keeping Time with Blue Hyacinths) will visit BSC in 2015.
