Last Saturday began with a surprising shutout in Columbia, Missouri, had a legitimate shootout in Waco, Texas, and ended with a Top 10 team losing at home to an unranked opponent. It’s gotten to the point where every week is wild and crazy and to be honest, we wouldn’t want it any other way! Here are some Week 7 superlatives:
MVP – Nick Chubb – RB – Georgia – Everything swirling around the Georgia Bulldog football program last week had everyone wondering how in the world the Bulldogs were even going to move the ball against the Tigers defense without star runningback Todd Gurley. Well, about four or five minutes into the 1st quarter all those questions were answered as Nick Chubb showed that he could be a feature back as a true freshman. Chubb was handed the ball 38 times for 143 yards and a touchdown in the big 34-0 SEC Eastern division win. It was easy for the Southern Football Report to pick an MVP this week.
Coach of the Week – Dan Mullen – Mississippi State – Mullen’s bunch sprinted out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter against the reigning SEC Champion Auburn Tigers and didn’t really look back. The Bulldogs did let it get interesting in the second quarter but carried a 28-13 lead into halftime. Mullen’s team started the season undefeated and is now the number one team in the country with a large majority of the 1st place votes, which deserves credit regardless of which team you pull for. Mississippi State has beaten three teams in a row who were ranked in the Top 10 when the Bulldogs played them and a lot of that credit has to fall on the shoulders of Head Coach Dan Mullen.
Game of the Week – Baylor Bears over TCU Horned Frogs 61-58 – I know a lot of people look at this game and say, well this just proves that the Baylor Bears don’t have a defense and shouldn’t be in the Top 10. But it’s hard to deny a team coming back from 21 points down early in the 4th quarter, regardless of what the final score ended up being. The Bears and Frogs went back and forth all game long and TCU pulled away early in the fourth quarter with a 58-37 lead after an interception return for a touchdown. Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and company were able to mount an incredible comeback over a team who prior to Saturday was only allowing a little over 13 points and 287 yards per game. Baylor got a 28 yard Chris Callahan field goal as time expired to get the big 61-58 win over a Top 10 team at home.
Coach Who Needs to Return His Company Car – Gary Pinkel – Missouri – The only thing that went right for the Missouri Tigers on Saturday is that they were able to get a capacity crowd to show up to Memorial Stadium & Faurot Field and watch the beating that was delivered by the Bulldogs. Georgia was without their best player in Todd Gurley as the NCAA investigates whether he accepted money for autographed memorabilia and the Tigers still couldn’t stop the Georgia offense that racked up almost 400 yards of total offense. Gary Pinkel’s group couldn’t even crack the 150-yard of total offense mark as there wasn’t a single player who did anything that could be considered playing well. The bottom line was Coach Pinkel didn’t have his team ready to play.
Uniform of the Week – Army Black Knights – For the second time of the season, the Black Knights earned Uniform of the Week honors from the Southern Football Report but this time because of the amazing digital camo look that Army has adopted the past couple of years on their football uniforms. The digital camo is the same that as used on their daily fatigues and is always a welcome touch on the football pants, numbers and especially on the helmets. It’s always good to see the service academies looking good, even if they don’t win the game.
Dud Uniform of the Week – Iowa State Cyclones – When I first saw that Iowa State uniforms for their game against Toledo, I immediately wanted to eat a corndog because all I could think about was something with mustard on it. The Cyclones did a good job a few years back when they were just trying to look like USC with different helmets but these days Iowa State has gone off of their rocker with their uniform sets. This was definitely a low point for college football uniforms in the state of Iowa, especially with the sweet classic look of their in-state rival Hawkeyes.
