ATLANTA, GA – Superior Court Judge Ronnie Joe Lane of the Pataula Judicial Circuit has been designated to serve in place of Justice Keith Blackwell in the appeal of Georgia Department of Community Health et al. v. Northside Hospital, Inc. (S14G0341) and Kennestone Hospital, Inc. v. Northside Hospital, Inc. (S14G0346).
The Supreme Court of Georgia will hear arguments in the case on Monday, May 5, 2014 during its 10:00 A.M. session. In this case, Kennestone Hospital and the state’s health planning agency are appealing a Georgia Court of Appeals decision that would deny Kennestone the Certificate of Need it must have to build an outpatient surgical center. In addition to hearing arguments, Judge Lane will participate in the Court’s decision.
Judge Lane, 67, was born, raised on a small farm, and attended public schools in Miller County, GA. In 1968, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in Europe and Vietnam. Along with other medals, he was awarded the Bronze Star for combat service in Vietnam. In 1973, he left the Army to attend law school at the University of Georgia. After graduating in 1975, he was admitted to the Georgia Bar and returned home to practice law.
He worked a short time for the firm of Walter Hays in Colquitt, GA before opening his own office as a sole practitioner in Donalsonville, GA, practicing law there and in the surrounding counties of southwest Georgia. He was twice elected as Solicitor General of the State Court of Miller County and served by appointment for six years as Juvenile Court Judge of Seminole County.
In 2000, Judge Lane was elected to the Superior Court of the seven-county Pataula Judicial Circuit in southwest Georgia. He was re-elected in 2004, 2008 and 2012. He also served for six years on the Judicial Council and as Administrative Judge of the 2nd Judicial Administrative District.
Judge Lane and his wife, Harriet Lane, have been married 45 years. She is a retired high school science teacher who now runs the family farm. They have two daughters. The Supreme Court of Georgia maintains a list of judges from around the state. If a justice must recuse himself or herself, the Court appoints the next judge on the list to replace the justice for that particular case.
