A Bainbridge Public Safety traffic stop led to a foot chase and a warrant arrest early this week.
On Tuesday, October 3, BPS Officer Timothy Shaw the driver of a green truck driving on the middle double yellow line on Shotwell Street and initiated a traffic stop. The driver immediately pulled over at the intersection of Clark and Shotwell Streets, opened his door and took off running.
Officer Shaw pursued the suspect on foot toward the Bainbridge Little Theater where the fleeing driver attempted to jump over a wooden gate. As Shaw approached, the driver, later identified as Joseph Hughes, was able to get to the top of the wooden gate before falling to the asphalt below. This allowed PSO Shaw to catch up to the absconder and take him to the ground.
While on the ground, PSO Shaw continued to command the suspect to stop resisting, but to no avail. Officer Shaw observed several cuts on the man’s face that seemed to be a result of the fall and called for EMS to check and treat the suspect. After securing the suspect in handcuffs, Shaw asked Hughes why he ran. Hughes told PSO Shaw that he didn’t have a driver’s license. PSO Shaw ran Hughes’ name and date of birth through E-911, and was advised that the suspect had active warrants out of Ohio and Illinois, with both requesting a hold be placed on him.
Joseph Hughes, 49, of Whitesville, Kentucky, was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license, obstruction of law enforcement, failure to maintain lane, failure to use turn signal, and criminal damage in the 2nd degree.
