It’s really easy to point to the Tiger Stadiums, Bryant-Denny Stadiums & Ohio Stadiums of the world as the best of the college football cathedrals but there are some smaller schools around the nation that have the pleasure of playing in absolute gems of stadium. This year we are going to countdown the top ten non-Power 5 conference stadiums in the country. Unfortunately for Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Michie Field in West Point & LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, I couldn’t include the Independent teams either.
#10 Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium was opened in 1965 as Memphis Memorial Stadium but was built with the purpose of luring the floundering Liberty Bowl which had been bounced out of the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ and also out of Atlantic City. The name was officially changed to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in 1976 after the bowl game’s success had become obvious. Originally the southwest side of the stadium was taller but in 1987 an expansion evened out the stadium to what you see today.
Today the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is the home field for the local Memphis Tigers and still the home of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and is also the home of the Southern Heritage Classic between Jackson State University and Tennessee State University. For a short period of time the Liberty Bowl was the home to the Memphis Showboats, a team in the USFL featuring local legend Reggie White as the star player. The Liberty Bowl was home for the XFL’s Maniax for one season before the league folded and was the home for one season for the Tennessee Oilers before they became the Tennessee Titans.
While Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium isn’t one of the oldest stadiums in the country and the actual Liberty Bowl in Memphis isn’t as old as some other bowl games either, this southern stadium on the local fairgrounds in Memphis, Tennessee, surely feels like it has lived out a couple lifetimes of teams and games.
