WEATHER: Storm Update (Sunday Afternoon)

The National Weather Service and the Decatur County EMS released the following information regarding the Tropical Depression that has now formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is threatening southwest Georgia Monday and Tuesday:

“Tropical Depression #3 has formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The depression is forecast to become Tropical Storm Colin later today or tonight. A briefing packet outlining the expected impacts is attached. Here are a few key points:

  • The tropical cyclone will move to the NNE – NE toward the state of Florida tonight and into Monday. Impacts would spread into our area generally on Monday and Monday Night.
  • Overall, though, impacts are expected to be relatively minor. The main threat will be related to localized flooding from heavy rain, as well as coastal flooding due to storm surge along the immediate Apalachee Bay coastline.
  • There is also a threat for isolated tornadoes across portions of the area Monday afternoon and evening.”
