Washington, D.C. – Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) today voted for and the House passed the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699), bipartisan legislation that updates privacy protections for emails maintained by third-party service providers, such as Google and Yahoo. Email privacy laws were last updated in 1986.
“The last time Congress updated email privacy laws, I was a junior in high school, had a CB radio in my truck, listened to music from a cassette tape and longed for parachute pants,” said Rep. Graves. “The vast changes in how Americans use technology since 1986 require updates to federal privacy laws. This legislation ensures Fourth Amendment privacy protections are the same for email and other digital content as they are for traditional mail and physical documents. In other words, this legislation puts a stop to government creepers. No more reading your emails without a warrant.”
Rep. Graves is a cosponsor of H.R. 699. Additionally, during the 113th Congress, Rep. Graves developed and introduced the Email Privacy Act with Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS-03)
