Decatur County man dies in weekend crash

A Decatur County man died after his sport utility vehicle collided with a tree on Saturday, January 9, according to the Georgia State Patrol post in Colquitt, Ga.

Rafael Corpus, 59, of the Fowlstown community, was driving a 2002 Nissan XTerra SUV east on Green Shade Road in southern Decatur County, when the accident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday night, according to the State Patrol.

Corpus’ SUV crossed the center dividing line and traveled across the west bound lane of Green Shade Road and went into a ditch, according to a GSP accident report filed by Trooper First Class Brian Palmer. The road was wet at the time of the accident and the road was dark.

Corpus’ SUV spun counter clockwise before striking a palm tree and then a utility pole. The Nissan XTerra overturned several times and Corpus, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

Corpus passed away at the scene of the accident.

According to the Bainbridge Post-Searchlight, funeral services for Mr. Corpus were held Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Guyton Brothers Funeral Home in Bainbridge, with burial following in Jonas Lobe Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to guytonbrothersfuneralhome.com
