A Bainbridge man was injured while working in an lube shop’s pit on Tuesday, August 4.
Jamie Phillips, an employee of Tommy T’s, 1704 E. Shotwell Street, Bainbridge, was working at about 12:45 p.m. when the accident happened.
A co-worker said Phillips was working underneath a vehicle at Tommy T’s and standing on a low stool to help him reach up into the car.
Somehow, Phillips lost his balance and took a hard spill, landing on the metal catwalk in the pit, Captain Jack Bunting of Bainbridge Public Safety said.
Phillips had a bad laceration on the back of his head when Decatur County EMS paramedics got to him. He also appeared to be in some sort of shock and was shaking, BPS Fire Chief Doyle Welch said.
After the vehicle was moved, several Bainbridge Public Safety officers went down into the pit to help EMS put Phillips on a gurney. After several minutes of work to get Phillips on the stretcher, they lifted Phillips out of the pit and onto a stretcher with wheels so that he could be put in an ambulance.
Due to the nature of Phillips’ injuries, Decatur County EMS requested an emergency medical helicopter come to the scene. The helicopter landed at about 1:21 p.m. in the parking lot next to the former Bainbridge K-Mart off Shotwell Street. BPS Captain Bunting said officers set up a landing zone in the large asphalt parking lot, instead of having the helicopter land at Memorial Hospital’s heli pad, due to the urgency of the situation.
The helicopter was going to take Phillips to a hospital in Tallahassee, Fla.
