Starting on Monday, we’ll be unveiling our top five favorite helmets in all of college football. Over the next month, as we get closer and closer to the start of high school and college football season, we’ll be posting enough high school and college football countdowns, interviews and articles to keep even the most diehard football fan occupied. We’ll be counting down the top fifteen stadiums in the country, our top 25 teams in the country, interviews with coaches as well as previews of high school regions and college conferences.
Two seasons ago the big trend in college football helmet fashion was the matte color paint job. It has made some helmets look good (Ohio, Texas A&M) while it made others look pretty bad (Wake Forest) but it isn’t over. I’m sure there will be more teams around the country who dive into the matte helmet trend. The newest trend that popped up last season was the chrome treatment on the helmet and overall it was a good look for just about every team who used it which also means someone will abuse the look and make it bad just like all other trends.
Here are, in no particular order, the four helmets just missed the cut:
Minnesota Golden Gophers – Matte Maroon – Minnesota was one of the teams that used the matte paint job the good way. Also, the matte dark red just seems to work easier than a lot of the other colors. Plus, something tells me the state of Minnesota isn’t about a lot of fluff which is why I don’t foresee a chrome treatment in Minneapolis anytime soon.
Oregon Ducks – Matte Green – Personally, I have been a fan of how outside the box Oregon has been for the past two decades but if I had to choose one helmet out of the 5000 that they’ve used in that same time period, the all green version from the Rose Bowl game this past January would win in a landslide.
Pittsburgh Panthers – Script Pitt – I have hated every Pittsburgh helmet they have ever worn that doesn’t contain the script ‘Pitt’ letters. The panther on the side of the helmet wasn’t very good and neither were the block Pitt letters. The script letters on the new gold is the perfect combination of old school and new school. I wish the Panthers would make it their primary helmet.
Navy Midshipmen – Dress Whites – I have a natural soft spot in my heart for the service academies and over the last couple of years they have really stepped up their helmet game but none have been better looking than the dress white helmets worn in Week 1 against the eventual National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes.
The number 5 helmet in our Top Five Helmet Countdown will be unveiled Monday morning so stay logged on to Sowegalive for that and more high school and college football countdowns.
