Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 998 Yates Spring Road around 1:14 p.m. Friday regarding a reported suicide threat. The residence is in the Brinson community in northwestern Decatur County.
Investigators stated Roger Braswell, 50, made threatening statements to deputies who responded to his house after Braswell reportedly threatened a former co-worker over the phone.
The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office applied for a warrant to charge Braswell with making terroristic threats, however, Braswell refused to come out of his home and told officers not to come in.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies saw Braswell left his home through the back door and begin shooting at two of the officers.
One deputy fired back, forcing Braswell to go back inside of his home.
Deputies went inside Braswell’s residence and found he had gunshot wounds to his shoulders, hip and knee. Braswell was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge, where he passed away on Friday night.
An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab.
After the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the South Georgia District Attorney’s Office.
The two Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies involved in the shooting have been re-assigned to administrative duties, per the Sheriff’s Office’s policy.
GBI Special Agent in Charge Bahne Rich of the GBI’s Thomasville office said Saturday afternoon that he could not initially release the names of the two deputies involved due to the investigation, but said their names would be made public at a later time.
