The Mississippi State Bulldogs finished the 2014 season with double digit wins for the first time since 1999. Dan Mullen has built the Mississippi State program into a respectable SEC West program and not the doormat is was for much of the 2000’s. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs in 2014 were a lot like the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2013. After taking a look at the results from last season six of the ten wins accumulated by Mississippi State came against opponents who didn’t finish the season above the .500 mark.
The Bulldogs open the season on the road but in the Magnolia State in Hattiesburg against Southern Miss before their home & conference opener the following week against LSU. Week three brings FCS opponent Northwestern State to Starkville before the Bulldogs hit the road again to take on the Auburn Tigers in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Last year’s game between Auburn & Mississippi State in Starkville turned out to be one of the most exciting games of the
season, when the Bulldogs held on to win 38-23.
October begins with another road game, this time in College Station against Texas A&M followed by a three game home stand. On October 10th, Troy visits Starkville followed by Louisiana Tech & conference opponent Kentucky. Last October, Kentucky & Mississippi State wound up in a pretty entertaining shootout in Lexington where Mississippi State held on to win 7th game of the season 45-31. Mississippi State enjoys their bye week on October 31st.
November is by far the most difficult month for the Bulldogs as they open the month after a bye week on the road at Missouri on a Thursday night. The next week Mississippi State welcome the reigning SEC champion Alabama Crimson Tide to Starkville for what has become a highly entertaining game year in and year out. The following week brings a trip to Fayetteville to take on an up-and-coming Arkansas team who finished the 2014 season 4-2 with shutout wins over LSU & Ole Miss. The Egg Bowl comes back to Starkville in 2015 with Ole Miss coming to town on the final Saturday of the regular season.
Mississippi State returns a lot of talent from a team that learned how to win in 2014. Head Coach Dan Mullen & quarterback Dak Prescott should be able to enter the month of November still in the hunt for the West title. If they can steal a game or two in November, watch out because the Bulldogs could be playing in Atlanta in December.
