Decatur County commissioners have narrowed down a list of people who could be appointed the next county administrator, Board of Commissioners chairman Dennis Brinson said Monday.
21 people submitted applications for the county administrator job before the application period closed on April 30.
Commissioner Brinson said commissioners have narrowed down the applicant pool to five candidates.
“I’ve asked my fellow commissioners to review the five applicants closely and we’ll select three finalists for the position,” Brinson said. “Once we have the three finalists, we will begin the interview process.”
Board of Commissioners Vice-Chairman Pete Stephens said on Monday he expects county commissioners should select the three finalists “by the end of the week.” In addition to setting up interviews with the three finalists, commissioners will also do background checks on them, according to Stephens.
Of the 21 original applicants, 19 were men and two were women. Brinson said one of the five “semi-finalists” is a woman.
Commissioner Stephens has previously said the overall applicant pool was a mix of both local people and others from around Georgia and the United States.
Former County Administrator Gary Breedlove, who had served in the position for almost three years, resigned effective April 30. Decatur County commissioners appointed local accountant Perry Henry to serve as interim administrator.
When will we know who the finalists are?
Under the terms of Georgia’s Open Records Act, county commissioners are allowed to discuss consideration of who they want to hire in closed meeting. However, they are required to release the names and applications of any candidate remaining after three finalists are chosen. After announcing the three finalists, county commissioners then have to wait 14 days before taking a final vote on who they wish to hire for the administrator position.
