Six students were recognized during the April 22nd Medical Assisting pinning ceremony held at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC). These students completed one semester of prerequisite coursework as well as multiple semesters of rigorous occupational coursework including a series of clinical rotations at local medical offices.
Jordan Cromer of Thomasville, Trina Henson of Cairo, Ga., Christina Shiver of Camilla, Ga., Jerri Wisely of Camilla, Ga., and Rebecca Contreras of Camilla, Ga., were recognized for attaining their Medical Assisting Diploma. Meagan Morrell of Cairo was honored for completing her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting.
“It is with great pride and honor that I pin the six ladies who have completed all requirements of the Medical Assisting program at SWGTC. This is one of the most community-oriented, selfless groups I have had the pleasure of teaching. I will borrow two lines from the American Association of Medical Assistants Creed to describe these ladies. First, ‘I aspire to render greater service’ and second, ‘I am strengthened by compassion, courage, and faith.’ They have volunteered on numerous occasions to be involved in improving the school and communities they represent. I have seen each lady grow and become stronger in their compassion for others, their courage to raise the bar, and their faith to believe in the profession and in themselves. I wish them the best as all six take the Certified Medical Assisting national exam next week,” stated Elizabeth Peace, RN, RMA (AMT), Medical Assisting Program Director.
SWGTC offers a five semester Medical Assisting degree program and a four semester diploma program that trains the student for administrative and clinical duties, primarily in physicians’ offices or clinics. Clinical skills include taking vital signs, obtaining medical histories, performing basic lab tests, sterilizing instruments, administering medications, and assisting the physician. Administrative skills include answering phones, scheduling appointments, transcription, filing medical and insurance reports, and arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
