About 5:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and Decatur County Fire and Rescue responded to a call regarding a sinking boat in the Bainbridge Boat Basin.
Volunteer firefighters Richard Maxwell and Colby Swicord were the first responders on scene. Fortuitously, Maxwell happened to have his boat with him when he and Swicord responded and were able to get the boaters onto their boat quickly. Approximately one minute later, DCSO Captain Julian Crowder and Investigator Ken Davidson responded with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office Rescue Boat and worked to help get the three young boaters to safety and their boat to the marina.
The boat was turned over to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources who responded to the call as well.
At this point, it is unknown what caused the boat to sink.
