Bearcats win game one at Spalding, 6-5.Bainbridge (20-7) and Spalding volleyed the lead five times on Friday, but the Bearcats came out on top for a 6-5 win on Friday at Spalding.
Bainbridge pulled ahead for good in the seventh inning when junior catcher, Noah Bryant, singled; scoring Will Kelley from second base.
Kelley had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits. He homered in the first inning, singled in the fifth inning, and doubled in the seventh inning.
Ty Varnum recorded the win for Bainbridge Bearcats Varsity even though he allowed five runs over seven innings. He struck out five, walked none and surrendered eight hits.
Bainbridge Bearcats Varsity was sparked by Kelley and Conner Strickland, who teamed up for six hits and three RBIs.
The top of the first saw Bainbridge Bearcats Varsity take an early lead, 2-0. After Keith Lyle singled, Kelley homered, bringing home Lyle.
Bearcats took the series with late inning heroics, 3-2.
Bainbridge (21-7) ended up on top of a back and forth affair with a 3-2 win in seven innings over Spalding to take game two and the series in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning Bainbridge struck for two runs and the lead. Caleb Boutwell was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Keith Lyle then sacrificed the Bainbridge right fielder to second. Will Kelley singled to center scoring Boutwell. Conner Strickland followed that with an RBI single scoring Kelley.
Cayden McQuaig got the win for Bainbridge. He allowed two runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked five and surrendered four hits. Kelley picked up the save; pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Bainbridge jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bainbridge Bearcats Varsity’s offense woke up as Keith Lyle singled before Noah Bryant singled.
Bainbridge will travel to Buford on Wednesday for round two of the GHSA playoffs. Buford is the defending state champion and currently ranked #1 in AAAA. Game times are 4:30 and 7:00 on Wednesday. Game time for game three, if necessary, would be 4:30 on Thursday.
